Animal Studies Camp sponsored by ASU August 3-7
Young scientists and animal lovers will love an opportunity to explore and learn on the ASU campus this summer.
HIDEAppalachian Pathways offers a special summer enrichment opportunity August 3-7 for students in third through sixth grade this fall. This interactive camp for animal lovers and young scientists meets at the Rankin Science Building from 1:00 – 5:15 each day. Students will have the opportunity to examine salamanders, lizards, snakes, and turtles. We will also study both live and preserved mammal specimens, research water quality, and explore the inhabitants of Kraut Creek. This investigation of animals and local animal habitats will be led by Monique Eckerd through the ASU Biology Department.
Appalachian Pathways is sponsored by the Office of Conferences and Institutes, which is part of Appalachian’s Division of Educational Outreach and Summer Programs. Bring a blanket or a chair and come settle beneath the shade of the beautiful maple trees on the lawn of this historic home to enjoy an afternoon of an old-time, down-to-earth celebration of our nation’s independence.
Beginning at 1 p.m. the summer interns of the Blowing Rock Stage Company will perform “Jack in the Park” an adaptation of Jack Tales. Next, Watauga County’s own Orville Hicks will tell Jack Tales in his own special style. He will also be on hand to sign copies of his books, Mountain Stories~Mountain Roots and Jack Tales and Mountain Yarns as told to Julia Taylor Ebel.
The Watauga Community Band will play patriotic bands beginning at 2 p.m. and until the parade starts at 3 p.m.
In the tradition of true Americana, plenty of watermelons will be served for everyone to enjoy.
The Jones House lawn is the perfect place to enjoy the 4th of July parade.
Everyone is invited to go inside the Jones House throughout the afternoon to look at the Watauga Arts Council gallery exhibits and to tour this 101 year old house.

The Harrill Senior Center is offering a program developed specifically for people with arthritis.
HIDELow-impact, joint-safe exercises led by AF-certified instructors can be taken either sitting down or standing. This program has been proven in research studies to reduce arthritis pain and improve ability to do more daily activities. The program will be offered from 1:30-2:30pm each Tuesday and Thursday (16 classes) beginning Tuesday, July 7th. There is no charge to attend. We request you reserve a space so that adequate materials will be available. Any age may attend but persons aged sixty and older will be given priority if class size exceeds space available. • June 15 & 22: Watercolor Wonders: Create beautiful Georgia O’Keefe style flowers and learn about watercolor techniques using washes, salt and more.
• June 29 & July 6: Stabile Fun: Create “standing mobiles,” in honor of Alexander Calder, working with clay, wire, beads and various objects to form stabiles.
• July 13 & 20th: Portraits with Pizzazz!: Learn how facial features fit together like a puzzle creating fun, expressive self- portraits using glue/chalk pastels.
• July 27th & Aug 3: Clay Days: Make wall plaques using polymer clay, and then use acrylic paints to complete their creations.

HIDEASU’s Department of Mathematical Sciences will sponsor Math Camp from Monday, July 13, to Thursday, July 16, for rising 6th through 12th-graders. This is the 12th year that this popular summer enrichment camp has been offered. Math Camp will meet from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. in Walker Hall on campus. Registration is $120. This camp is designed to actively engage students in mathematics. Students who love math, fear math, hate math, excel at math and/or need help with math are all welcome and encouraged to attend. Dr. Anita Kitchens, director of Math Camp, is a professor in the ASU Department of Mathematics and author of the book Mathematics: Yes You Can! A Framework for overcoming Math Anxiety. HIDE Elk Knob Trail Workdays
Elk Knob will begin its first of many trail workdays on March 14th at 9am and will hold them through the month of September.
HIDEElk knob will be holding its first volunteer trail workday of the
season on Saturday March 14th. The day will begin at 9am and go
through 2pm. Please be sure to bring water and any food you feel you
will need while on the trail. We also request that you bring work
gloves (leather preferred), and you must wear cover toed shoes. No
flip flops or sandals will be permitted while working on the trail.
This is a great time to meet new folks and give back to your community
as well as take part in a trail that will be here for many years to
come. We have built just under 1.5 miles of the 2.2 mile trail. We
look forward to seeing you on the trail. If you are unable to make this
workday we will be holding them each Saturday 9am-2pm weather
